F1: Jet-on planning to break duck at Silverstone by Virgil Ellipse
8th Jul 2011
McLap'em driver Bunsen Jet-on, yet to finish higher than fourth in 11 races at his home circuit, is planning to break a duck this weekend, in the hope that the sacrifice will please the god of Formula One - or Bernie Ecclescake, as he's sometimes known - and bring him luck.

The duck, a South American ringed teal, will be broken over the nosecone of Jet-on's car in the McLap'em garage shortly before the first practice session. Jet-on will wear a white dress shirt throughout the ceremony and will walk on his knees, in deference to the deity.

Superstition is rife amongst racing drivers, with many having lucky racing boots, gloves and even underwear, but the practice of sacrificing animals before race weekends has seen a sharp increase since Suchfine Fettle attributed his surprise win for Lollo Rosso at Monza in 2008 to a ceremony he had performed on the previous Thursday, at which he strangled a pigeon.

And as drivers look for any way to help them halt Fettle's dominance this season, Jet-on is not alone in making a sacrifice this weekend: Mark Cobber will be throttling an emu before each session, Vitally Imperative is planning to garrotte a brace of pheasant on Saturday morning and Sebastien Blimey will be spending much of the weekend in his team's motorhome, choking a chicken.
