Rant Number 1: Car Numbers	Spleen vented on 5th Dec 2001

From Autosport's news pages 5th December 2001: "Formula 1 teams will not have to undertake expensive alterations in promotional and advertising campaigns because of a change in their car numbers after motorsport's governing body, the FIA, reverted to its old numbering policy. "The number order of the 2001 teams was decided by an outfit's relative position in the 2000 constructors' world championship. With such a change every year, it would have meant teams being forced to change any promotional material every year - costing them several thousands of pounds. "The FIA have decided that next year teams will keep the numbers they had this season and they will not be altered by a team's position in the world championship. "This means, for example, that Sauber will keep the numbers 16 and 17 - even though they finished fourth in the constructors' championship this year. "The only change will be that the team for which the reigning drivers' world champion races will carry numbers 1 and 2." Dotdotdotcomma.com would like to state categorically that THIS IS STUPID. In what way does changing a couple of number stickers on a car result in "expensive alterations in promotional and advertising campaigns" any more than changing sponsors, liveries and drivers every five minutes?
