So, Lord Silverstone, the Rt Hon Sir Bernice Ecclescake OBE has been on a fact-finding mission to Turkey to check out the contenders for a possible 2005 Turkish Grand Prix.
Just what the fuck is he on?
There are already plenty of good Grands Prix on the F1 calendar in countries with a firm commitment and existing involvement in the sport.
I'm sure we all remember the many glorious contributions that Turks have made to the sport in the form of innumerable race-winners and world champions. And the famous Turkish F1 teams that have added to both the on-track thrills and spills and the paddock gossip and politics. Then, of course, there's the technologically advanced Turkish motor industry, whose cars are sold by the millions worldwide, and whose grip on the motorsport industry is legendary. Not to mention, obviously, the famous Turkish tyre manufacturers that make Michelin and Bridgestone look like a pair of small-time condom manufacturers.
Lest we forget, there is a vast, untapped television audience in Turkey, and a huge market for prestige cars.
The country also has a high-quality environment: most of the toilets do flush these days. And the streets are extremely safe, unless of course, you are a Leeds United fan.
Still, a lot of people smoke there.
