G-IRLs' names
by Mathias Olaf Uncertain
1st Nov 2007
Is this really what Americans want their daughters to be like when they grow up?
The latest statistics from the US Social Security Administration, who clearly have too much time on their hands, show that the name "Danica" is rapidly increasing in popularity since
Danica Fitchick
led the Indy 500 in 2005.
"Danica", a Slavic word meaning "Morning Star" (emits sparks and bangs) didn't rank in the top 1,000 baby names from 1996 to 2004, but has shown a steady rise since Fitchick was named the IndyCar Series' Rookie of the Year.
In 2005, Danica returned to the list at number 610 and to an all-time record ranking of 352 in 2006.
The most popular names in the US in 2006 were Jacob and Emily. We know this because they are ranked "number 1", and the US Social Security Administration helpfully advises "Note: Rank 1 is the most popular, rank 2 is the next most popular, and so forth."
That must be confusing for most Americans. Surely they meant "..., and so
third
