IRL:
EARL confirms paddle-shift gearbox
by Virgil Ellipse
29th Jan 2008
The
EARL
EasyCars
Series has confirmed that it will switch to a paddle-shift gearbox for the 2008 season.
The new system replaces the manual lever and will be compulsory at every circuit except Indianapolis, where they don't know what it means.
Semi-automatic gearboxes prevent drivers over-stressing their engines, which is a particular problem on ovals, where the number of gear-changes a driver will make during a race can even reach double figures.

KEY TO SERIES NAMES
(hovering over the abbreviations in the table above also shows the full series name)
CCA
Champ Car Atlantic
AKA 'The Big Puppy', Champ Car Atlantic is the feeder series for Champ Cars, surprisingly.
CHAMP
Champ Car
One of the competing US single-seater series. Don't ask us how it differs from the other one.
EF3
F3 Euroseries
Amalgam of french and German F3 premier leagues, which has cheekily been challenging British F3's supremacy.
F1
Formula 1
The world's most prominent, most expensive and frequently most tedious single-seater series.
F2
Formula 2
The new-for-2009 category is called F2 despite being a single-make series, which was why GP2 wasn't allowed to call itself F2 when it started. What is the FIA on? Oh yes..., Max Moseley.
IRL
Indy Racing League
Classic Mickey-Mouse racing of the first water.
NASCAR
NASCAR
Umbrella term for a number of bafflingly popular Stateside stock car series.
SLF
Superleague Formula
One of the many mooted tie-ups between single-seaters and football teams, although this one actually got as far as holding some races.
