F1: Red Rag try radical new aero solution by Virgil Ellipse

That new engine cover in full: catch it while you can
Red Rag Racing caused a surprise on the first day of this week's test at Barcelona, when they ran a radical engine cover fin on their new RB4.

As the picture shows, the top of the engine cover extends horizontally from the top of the roll hoop all the way to the rear wing.

The new fin seems to be aimed at helping lateral stability and is exactly the kind of outside-the-box thinking and innovative design that the brilliant minds in F1 are so good at coming up with and that the prescriptive bean-counters at the FIEh? are even better at banning.

So as an experiment, we started a clock ticking when the car first hit the track at 9am this morning and we'll stop it when the FIEh? declares it illegal.

dotdotdotcomma invites both its readers to guess how long this will take.

[11th May 2008 09:59:59 update: Well, blow us down if the FIEh? hasn't confounded all our expectations and utterly failed to ban the thing. It just goes to show you.]
