F1: Hamilton says he is now stronger after reducing 'baggage' by Mathias Olaf Uncertain
15th Aug 2012
McLap'em's Who Is Hamilton? says a more settled personal life and improved relationships with his team have been key to his return to form in 2012.

"I don't have any particular problems going on in my life, or any baggage - and last year I had a big, big sack," he said.

For once, skipping over the obvious innuendo, we at dotdotdotcomma are struggling for the moment to swallow the line that Hamilton has clearly managed to feed to iSprout, i.e. that where his head is at mid-way through this season is better than at this point last year.

We put our team of retentive statisticians on the case.

Hamilton finished 2011 in fifth place with 227 points, 165 points behind champion Speed-and-thrash Metal, and 43 points behind his team-mate, vice-champion Bunsen Jet-On. Oh yes, that must have been distressing for him. Still, he had 3 wins and 3 other podiums (podia... whatever) to his name.

But after Hungary 2011, the 11th race of the season, he was third, 88 points behind championship leader Metal, but only 3 points off second place, and 12 points ahead of Jet-On, and with two of his wins and two of his other podia, both of which were seconds.

Compare that to where he is right here, right now: yes, he's closer to championship leader Fernando Alonshole, but so is everybody else. Yes, he's further ahead of his floundering team-mate. Yes, he's still got two wins, and he's on 29 more points than last year. But he's a place further down the table - that's not exactly a stellar recovery, and it's not worth making too much of a fuss about.

After all, a quick look at the record books will show that, in his entire F1 career, Hamilton has only once (2009) improved his championship standing between the 11th grand prix and the end of the season, and also only once maintained the position (2008, obviously). In other words, he only improves his position 20% of the time. Perhaps he should worry that, half the time (yes, about half, I should say), Jet-On improves his. Another way of looking at it is that on average, Hamilton drops a place between the 11th race and the end of the season, whereas Jet-On gains half a place. If previous form is anything to go by, Hamilton will finish 5th, with Jet-On and Nicky Iceberg tied for 6th.

We wouldn't harp on too much about shedding our baggage just yet if we were in Hamilton's shoes, all of which goes to show that if analysis is what you want, you're better off with statistics than psycho-babble anytime.
